The Inbox Repair Tool can be started with scanpst.exe. The location of this file is different for almost every version of Outlook and it sometimes also depends on which language of Outlook you have installed and even if you have it installed on a 32-bit version of Windows or 64-bit version of Windows.
To locate the scanpst.exe on your computer, the easiest way is to open File Explorer and search C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86) for scanpst.exe
Once located, follow these instructions to check your PST file for corruption:
1. Double click on scanpst.exe to run the program
2. When the Inbox Repair Tool scanpst.exe starts, enter the location of your .pst or .ost file. It should find it by default, but in case it doesn’t, here’s where you can find your file:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\
Windows Vista : C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\
Windows 7: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\
Windows 10: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\
Note: If it is not in any of those locations, try looking in Documents\Outlook Files
3. Click on Start
4. After a while, the Inbox Repair Tool will give you a report and some options for the next step.
Ensure that Make backup of scanned file before repairing is selected.
You can select Details for more information about the corruption or select Repair to begin repairing the file
5. Depending on the size of your Outlook PST or OST file, it can take a while, once complete, you will see the dialogue box Repair complete
6. You can now close the Inbox Repair Tool and try using your Outlook now
Note: That you now have a backup of your Outlook file that could be taking some space up.
